The Avocado Craze Isn’t Just a Phase

Some people seem to think avocado toast is this new social media craze, where if you don’t have a photo of an oozing poached egg dripping over a mountain of green mush and a crispy baguette on your Instagram, you’re clearly stuck in the 17th century. They’re not necessarily wrong.

Avocados are often at the center of diets; they’re a source of good fats and they make every meal fifteen times better. When you live in Miami, where your weekend plans are centered around your Sunday brunch, you are surrounded by people who love avo toast as much as one would love his/her own children.

Clearly avocado toast isn’t the only menu item where avocados have the spotlight. Have you every thought about the foods that would quite literally be nothing if avocados ceased to exist tomorrow? (God forbid)

  1. Guacamole is a staple snack dip, Chipotle topping, and all-around all-star food. It goes with just about everything if you love it enough. It makes veggies and chips more enjoyable and it puts your burrito over the edge of an A+. A worry trending all over social media is that with Trump’s 20% import tax on goods coming from Mexico, people will no longer get to enjoy their favorite Spanish dishes without the flavor enhancer that is avocados. Here’s hoping nothing will ever take away our precious fruit.
  2. Sushi. Needless to say, no roll is the same sans avocado. You name it – spicy tuna, California, rainbow rolls all are as delicious as they are because of avocado. It’s often a prominent feature in sushi rolls, the item that decides which one to order out of the abundance of options on a menu. Imagine eating a sushi roll that solely consisted of imitation crab, cucumber, rice, and seaweed. There would be an apparent absence of diversity in flavor and texture. It would be bland and less filling. It would be a sad, sad world.
  3. Avocado salad is a must-have at any barbecue. It requires minimal effort and tastes so fresh. It incorporates all the best parts of the barbecue aside from the meat itself. It makes eating corn more enjoyable because it’s not on the cob and has diced avocado and tomato to make it more interesting.
  4. Any salad, sandwich, wrap, or burger isn’t complete until topped with avocado. You can forgo cheese when there’s avocado. Sick of balsamic? Try avocado dressing. Don’t know what else to put in your bowl besides lettuce? Avocado. Simply: avocado is the answer to every question.
  5. Straight up avocado. You heard that right. People genuinely enjoy eating avocado with a spoon. Dress it with some hot sauce, salt, and pepper, and it’s called a meal to some. I think the idea of avocado being the one and only thing on your plate is under-appreciated and I’m not opposed to trying it out.

It’s become a trend recently to somehow include avocado into every meal. Whether it’s guacamole, sushi, or a whole avocado, there are so many ways to eat the fruit, which has a long list of health benefits.

Avocado makes every meal fifteen times better.
